Memoriam Tribute - This tribute was published in our Fall Concert program on Nov 2, 2024.

It is with heavy hearts that we dedicate this concert to our beloved brass coach, Don W. Howe. Don joined YPSO shortly after Maestro David Ramadanoff began assembling his talented team of sectional coaches. Over the years, he enriched the lives of countless young musicians through his passion for teaching and his deep love for music.

Don was not only a gifted performer—having played with every major orchestra in the Bay Area—but also an inspiring educator, composer, and arranger. He composed the "Fanfare for California" for the California Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in 2009 and was a strong advocate for music education, mentoring aspiring teachers in the Oakland East Bay Symphony’s MUSE program. His motto, "How You Think is How You Play," encapsulated his innovative approach to music education.

Colleagues and students alike have shared their profound respect for Don.

Larry London, YPSO's Woodwind Coach, remarked, “Don was a teacher and coach par excellence... a calm voice of reason in all the musical situations I knew him.” His ability to alleviate the stress of auditions and competitions with kindness and understanding was unmatched.

David Ramadanoff, YPSO's Music Director, reflected on Don’s exceptional technique and mentorship, stating, “He had just the right technique for helping students play the music just right.

William Harvey, YPSO's Trumpet Coach, shared, “I met Don Howe during my senior year of high school (Fall '81-Spring '82). Don was living in Berkeley and was well regarded as a private trombone teacher. A member of our jazz ensemble was studying abroad, and I needed to double on trombone in order for our band to perform certain songs at various competitions. Don welcomed me to the trombone and gave me everything I needed in order to learn the instrument. I was especially impressed with his tone quality as I hadn't been that close to a professional trombone sound before.

Don’s legacy lives on through the many students and colleagues he inspired. His warmth, dedication, and unwavering support will be deeply missed, yet his influence will continue to resonate in the music and lives of those he touched. He was, and always will be, a beloved member of our YPSO family.
